Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture

At Currumbin State School we value the significant contributions of our First Nations People and work hard to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our curriculum. Our students and their families have the opportunity to contribute through;

Indigenous Leaders

Each year our Year 6 Indigenous students are invited to participate in the Indigenous Leadership Program.  Students participate in team building activities and undertake additional responsibilities at significate school events.  Our Indigenous Leaders are role models who represent their culture with pride and honor.

Indigenous Reference Group

Once per term parents, staff and community members are invited to our Indigenous Reference Group Meeting.  At these meetings we discuss our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives including, NAIDOC week, deadly choices, student leadership, school health checks and community and school events.

NAIDOC Week

During Term 2 we celebrate NAIDOC Week at Currumbin State School. 

Students participate in a range of activities including cultural workshops, dreamtime stories, ochre face painting, traditional tools and boomerang demonstrations, Kup Murri food tasting, poetry/colouring in competitions.

The week culminates with a special whole school NAIDOC Assembly with performances from students, staff and special guests.

Indigenous Champion

Every South East Region State Primary School has an Indigenous Champion appointed to lead their school community in developing culturally responsive practices for improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Mr Jarah McNamara is the Currumbin SS Indigenous Champion.
